Our Herd

We know and love all of our girls and boys from the youngest born 3 weeks ago at the time of writing this, to the oldest doe we have.

Each has its own personality and mannerisms, which you notice when you are with them all the time.

Dave despite his horns, is really a gentle boy and Cherubin for all her size, is the biggest sook and loves being scratched behind the ears. Dewdrop has to know exactly what you are doing, be it fencing or milking. That head over your shoulder will be her checking you out. She also loves to creep up on you, when you are milking and pull your hair.

It all started 12 years ago, when they first arrived, as pets and mobile lawn mowers, to help keep the paddocks down (Much cheaper than slashing and a lot cuter). Then we discovered that goatsmilk is better for asthma sufferers than cows milk. As the youngest in the house has asthma, we set about finding a young buck, to change the focus of the herd, from mowers, to milkers.

About 3 years ago we joined the Australian Dairy Goat Society. This made us a registered goat stud. We went about changing the nature of our herd.

We were fortunate enough to obtain 2 bucks with excellent blood lines and with these boys in mind, went after some new does to create the "Ellacoldi" bloodline. We were fortunate enough to purchase some pureblood does, from other regions of NSW and bought home ( in the back of our starwagon) this injection of new blood, deepening our gene pool.

Over the last 2 years our breeding program has greatly improved the milk yield of our herd. We are slowly reaching the point, where our herd has developed to the extent that we will soon be in a position to sell our newly developed blood line to other breeders.

Our herd are much loved members of our family. When people ask after our kids, we say 4 legged or 2?

Our herd is disease free, testing negative for CAE and Johne's disease.
